Xerjoff Casamorati Mefisto is a bright, clean citrus-floral that carries more than a century of history in its name. It belongs to Xerjoff's Casamorati line, a revival of the original Casamorati perfume house of 1888, and it is a tribute to classic Italian perfumery and the elegance of Art Nouveau. The name nods, with a certain wit, to Mephistopheles, the demon of Goethe's Faust, an unexpected reference for a scent this fresh and soothing.
It opens with a sparkling burst of Calabrian lemon, grapefruit and bergamot, lifted by lavender flowers that give it an aromatic, green-tinged freshness rather than a simple citrus zing. At its heart, Florentine iris and rose absolute bloom quickly through the citrus, a powdery, elegant floral centre with the rose leading, calming and refined.
As it settles, the base grounds everything in Mysore sandalwood, cedar, amber and soft musk, clean and smooth, lingering close to the skin. The result is that rare thing: a fragrance that reads as light and fresh yet lasts, unhurried and quietly sophisticated.
