The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Mini Frosted Gold, reference 67630OR.GG.1312OR.01-B, is one of the smallest Royal Oaks ever made, a 23mm reinterpretation of the 20mm Mini Oak of 1997, and it turns the sports-watch icon into something closer to a jewel. The case and integrated bracelet are 18-carat pink gold, and the finish is the reason to want it: Frosted Gold, an ancient Florentine technique revived by jeweller Carolina Bucci and adopted by Audemars Piguet in 2016. Artisans strike the gold thousands of times with a diamond-tipped tool, leaving microscopic indentations that catch light like diamond dust, so the whole watch sparkles without a single set stone.
The dial continues the effect in tone-on-tone pink gold, with the fine Petite Tapisserie waffle pattern that is unique to the Royal Oak, faceted pink gold hour-markers filled with luminescent material, and the model's signature Royal Oak hands. The octagonal bezel and its exposed screws keep the design unmistakable even at this reduced scale.
It runs the quartz Calibre 2730, chosen to keep the case slim at just 6.6mm, and it has a useful trick: pulling the crown stops the movement when the watch is off the wrist, which stretches the battery life beyond seven years. It is water resistant to 50 metres behind a glare-proofed sapphire crystal.
