Description
The Breguet Reine de Naples is the oldest named model in watchmaking, and its story is extraordinary: it descends directly from the watch Abraham-Louis Breguet made in 1810 for Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples and Napoleon's sister, a piece widely regarded as the very first wristwatch ever made. Every Reine de Naples since has kept the egg-shaped oval case that defined that original, and this reference renders it in 18k rose gold at 32.7 by 27.3mm, with Breguet's signature coined, fluted edge.
The dial is the heart of it. It is Tahitian black mother-of-pearl, and rather than centring everything, Breguet sets an off-centre chapter ring low on the dial at 6 o'clock, its Roman numerals worked in mother-of-pearl marquetry, tiny pieces of shell cut and inlaid by hand. Polished rose gold Breguet hands read against the dark, iridescent surface. The crown is set with a single briolette-cut diamond, an elongated faceted stone of around 0.15 carats, and the lug at 6 o'clock carries a further 16 brilliant-cut diamonds.
Behind the sapphire caseback is the self-winding Calibre 586/1, with a silicon balance spring for antimagnetism and stability, and around 38 hours of power reserve. It is water resistant to 30 metres, on a brown alligator strap with a rose gold deployant clasp.
