Born from Fire and Aviation

Paul Morszeck founded Rimowa in 1898, opening a workshop near Cologne Cathedral that produced wooden trunks and leather goods for travelling professionals. His son Richard joined the company in 1931 and transformed it. The story goes that a fire destroyed the factory's wood stock, and the only material that survived was aluminium. Richard made a decision that would define the next century: Rimowa would build its cases from aluminium. In 1937, the first Rimowa aluminium suitcase appeared. In 1950, Richard added the parallel grooves that have become the brand's signature, inspired by the corrugated fuselage of the Junkers F13 aircraft. The grooves were not decorative. They were structural: adding rigidity to thin aluminium sheets without adding weight.

Third generation owner Dieter Morszeck continued the family's engineering approach. In 1976, he developed the first waterproof case for professional filmmakers and photographers. In 2000, he introduced the first polycarbonate suitcase to the market, creating a lightweight alternative to aluminium without sacrificing durability. In 2016, LVMH acquired an 80% stake for €640 million, and Alexandre Arnault (son of LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault) became CEO. Rimowa became LVMH's first German subsidiary, bringing German precision engineering into the French luxury group's portfolio alongside Louis Vuitton trunks and Hermès leather goods.

The Collections

Original

The Rimowa Original is the aluminium icon. Made from anodised aluminium with the signature grooved shell, it is the suitcase that built the brand's reputation and the one that most people picture when they hear the name Rimowa. The Original requires approximately 200 components and 1,000 production steps, assembled by around 50 craftsmen. Each case develops a unique patina of dents, scratches, and travel stickers over time, which Rimowa considers a feature rather than a flaw. Aluminium has "Persönlichkeit" (personality), as the brand puts it: it records the character of the person who uses it. Available in Cabin, Check In, and Trunk sizes, in Silver, Black, and limited edition finishes.

Essential

The Essential is Rimowa's polycarbonate line, introduced in 2000 as the first polycarbonate suitcase on the market. It maintains the grooved design language of the Original but in a material that is significantly lighter and more flexible: polycarbonate absorbs impact by flexing rather than denting, making it ideal for frequent flyers who check luggage regularly. The Essential is available in a wider range of colours than the Original (including seasonal limited editions) and at a lower price point, making it the most popular Rimowa for everyday travel.

Classic

The Classic is Rimowa's heritage line: aluminium construction with retro design elements including leather handles, vintage style clasps, and a warmer aesthetic that references the brand's pre war luggage. It is the choice for collectors who want the aluminium experience with a more traditional look than the modern Original.

Hybrid

Launched in 2020, the Hybrid combines aluminium construction with polycarbonate elements, creating a case that offers the rigidity and prestige of metal with the weight savings of polymer. It represents Rimowa's engineering philosophy in its purest form: use whatever material does the best job for each component, regardless of convention.

Collaborations and Limited Editions

Under LVMH ownership, Rimowa has become one of the most prolific collaborators in luxury. Partnerships with Supreme (limited edition red and black aluminium cases), Off White and Virgil Abloh (transparent "See Through" polycarbonate), Dior (Oblique logo anodised into aluminium), Porsche (911 inspired editions), and Daniel Arsham (eroded suitcase art series) have made certain Rimowa pieces genuine collectibles. Limited edition Rimowa cases regularly trade above retail on the secondary market, with the Supreme collaboration reaching multiples of its original price. For collectors, a limited Rimowa is where luggage meets contemporary art.

Why Rimowa for Dubai

Dubai is a city built on travel. Its residents fly more frequently than almost any other population in the world: business trips, weekend getaways to European capitals, annual summer migrations, and regular regional travel across the Gulf. For this lifestyle, luggage is not an afterthought. It is essential equipment that gets used dozens of times per year, and it needs to withstand the realities of Middle Eastern airports, extreme heat on tarmacs, and the handling that comes with high frequency flying. Rimowa's engineering, specifically the aluminium Original's structural integrity and the polycarbonate Essential's impact absorption, are designed for exactly this level of use.

The UAE's 5% VAT compared to European rates of 19% to 25% provides a cost advantage on Rimowa purchases. At Konesseur, every Rimowa piece is authenticated and available with worldwide shipping from our boutique at Box Park on Al Wasl Road. Frequently Asked Questions About Rimowa

Where is Rimowa made?

Rimowa produces its luggage in its own factories in Germany (Cologne, the original headquarters), Czech Republic, and Canada. It does not outsource manufacturing. The aluminium Original line requires approximately 200 components, 1,000 production steps, and around 50 craftsmen per case.

What is the difference between Rimowa Original and Essential?

The Original is made from anodised aluminium. The Essential is made from polycarbonate. The Original is heavier, more rigid, and develops a unique patina of dents and scratches over time. The Essential is lighter, more flexible, absorbs impact by flexing, and is available in more colours. The Original is the prestige choice. The Essential is the practical choice for frequent flyers who check luggage.

Why does Rimowa have grooves?

The parallel grooves were added in 1950, inspired by the corrugated fuselage of the Junkers F13, the first all metal passenger aircraft (1919). The grooves serve a structural purpose: they add rigidity to thin aluminium sheets without adding weight, the same engineering principle used in aircraft construction. The grooves became Rimowa's most recognisable design element.

Who owns Rimowa?

LVMH, the French luxury conglomerate, acquired Rimowa in 2016. Alexandre Arnault (son of LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault) served as CEO. Rimowa was LVMH's first German subsidiary. The acquisition brought Rimowa into the same group as Louis Vuitton and Hermès.

Is Rimowa worth the price?

Rimowa luggage is engineered to last decades. The aluminium Original develops character with use rather than deteriorating. The polycarbonate Essential is backed by Rimowa's global service network. For frequent travellers who use their luggage 10 to 50 times per year, the cost per trip over the life of a Rimowa case is often lower than cheaper alternatives that need replacing every few years. It is also the most recognisable luggage brand in the world, which carries its own value for professionals and frequent travellers.

Does Rimowa aluminium dent easily?

Aluminium dents. Rimowa considers this a feature, not a defect. Each dent and scratch becomes part of the case's personal history, a visible record of the journeys it has taken. The structural grooves prevent the shell from collapsing under impact even when dented. If you prefer luggage that looks pristine after every trip, the polycarbonate Essential is the better choice: it flexes under impact and returns to its original shape.

What sizes does Rimowa come in?

Rimowa offers Cabin (carry on, typically 55cm height), Check In M (medium hold luggage, approximately 67cm), Check In L (large, approximately 78cm), and Trunk (oversized, designed to lie flat). Cabin sizes comply with most airline carry on regulations, though dimensions vary slightly between collections. For Dubai based travellers flying Emirates, Etihad, or other Gulf carriers, Rimowa Cabin sizes fit comfortably within the generous carry on allowances.

What is the Rimowa Multiwheel system?

Rimowa's patented Multiwheel system uses ball bearing mounted wheels that allow the case to roll smoothly in any direction with minimal effort. The system was refined through multiple generations and is one of the engineering details that distinguishes Rimowa from competitors. Four wheel cases glide effortlessly across airport floors, even when fully loaded.

Are Rimowa limited editions worth collecting?

Yes. Limited edition Rimowa collaborations (Supreme, Off White, Dior, Daniel Arsham, Porsche) regularly trade above retail on the secondary market. The Supreme collaboration in particular has reached multiples of its original price. Limited Rimowa cases occupy the intersection of luxury luggage and contemporary art, making them both functional travel tools and collectible objects.

How do I care for Rimowa aluminium?

Clean with a soft damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or chemicals. Minor dents and scratches are expected and contribute to the case's character. For deeper dents, Rimowa's global service centres can perform professional repairs. Store with the case slightly open to prevent moisture buildup. In Dubai's climate, wipe down after exposure to sand or salt air.

How does Rimowa compare to Louis Vuitton luggage?

Louis Vuitton luggage is defined by its trunk making heritage, Monogram canvas, and fashion positioning. Rimowa is defined by German engineering, grooved aluminium, and functional performance. LV luggage is the fashion statement. Rimowa is the engineering statement. Many serious travellers own both: a Rimowa for the hold (durability, protection) and an LV Keepall as a carry on (style, flexibility). The two brands complement each other.
