Hermès lindy Bags

The Lindy spent years as a quiet favourite among collectors in Asia before the rest of the world caught on. Now it's one of the hardest non-quota Hermès bags to find at any boutique, and the secondary market has responded accordingly. What makes the Lindy different from every other Hermès bag is ...

The Lindy, Up Close

Introduced in 2006, the Lindy was named after the Lindy Hop swing dance because of the way its double handles swing when carried. The design is unlike anything else in the Hermès range: two curved top handles, a wide top opening with a turn lock closure, a shoulder strap integrated into the construction (not removable, not an afterthought), and a silhouette that sits flat when set down and collapses gently under its own weight. There is no rigid structure. The Lindy is meant to move with you, and it does.

For years, the Lindy flew under the radar in Western markets while Asian collectors, particularly in Japan and Korea, recognised it as one of the most practical Hermès bags available. By 2023, the secret was out. Demand outstripped supply. Boutique availability dropped. And secondary market prices climbed to reflect a bag that was suddenly being treated with the same reverence as the BKC trinity.

Sizes

The Lindy comes in three sizes that serve genuinely different purposes. The Mini Lindy (20cm) is a compact crossbody that fits a phone, card holder, keys, and a lipstick. It's the going out Lindy. The Lindy 26 is the everyday sweet spot: enough room for a water bottle, sunglasses case, wallet, phone, and daily essentials without feeling oversized. Most buyers end up here. The Lindy 30 is the work and travel size: it fits a tablet, a full wallet, a water bottle, and the general overflow of a busy life. If you're choosing between 26 and 30 and you carry a lot, go 30. If you prefer a bag that doesn't swallow everything, go 26.

Leathers

The Lindy's slouchy character means it works best in softer leathers. Clemence (grained, heavy, the most classic Lindy leather) gives the bag its signature relaxed drape and ages beautifully. Swift (smooth, lightweight, more formal) produces a sleeker Lindy that shows scratches more easily but looks exceptional in saturated colours. Evercolor (semi-matte, lighter than Clemence, more structured than Swift) has become increasingly popular because it balances drape with durability. Taurillon Clemence and Togo also appear on select models. Avoid Epsom for the Lindy: its rigidity fights the bag's design intent, and Hermès rarely produces the Lindy in Epsom for that reason.

How the Lindy Compares

Against the Birkin: the Birkin is a structured tote with two handles. No shoulder or crossbody option. The Birkin makes a statement. The Lindy makes your day easier. Most collectors own both because they solve different problems.

Against the Kelly: the Kelly is architectural, formal, top handle with an optional shoulder strap. The Lindy is relaxed, casual, and carries three ways natively. The Kelly is for structured outfits. The Lindy is for everything else.

Against the Picotin: the Picotin is an open top bucket bag with no closure and no strap. Simpler, smaller, more accessible in price. The Lindy is more versatile (three carry styles, closure, larger capacity) but costs more. The Picotin is often the first Hermès bag. The Lindy is often the one people reach for most after they've built a collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Hermès Lindy?

A slouchy, versatile Hermès bag introduced in 2006, named after the Lindy Hop swing dance. Its defining feature is three carry styles in one bag: hand held, shoulder, and crossbody. Available in Mini (20cm), 26cm, and 30cm sizes. One of the most practical and most sought after Hermès bags on the secondary market.

How much does a Hermès Lindy cost?

The Mini Lindy retails from approximately AED 33,000 in Clemence. The Lindy 26 and 30 retail higher depending on leather and colour. On the secondary market, pricing reflects the current supply shortage: popular colours and sizes in Clemence and Evercolor trade at or above retail. The Lindy has been appreciating steadily since 2023 as demand has outpaced production.

What size Lindy should I get?

Mini (20cm) for going out with just the essentials. The 26 for everyday carry, the most popular choice. The 30 for work or travel when you need more room. If choosing between 26 and 30: the 26 if you prefer a contained bag, the 30 if you carry a lot. Most buyers choose the 26.

What leather is best for the Lindy?

Clemence is the classic choice: grained, heavy, beautiful drape. Swift is sleeker and more formal but scratches visibly. Evercolor balances both: semi-matte, lighter, durable. Avoid Epsom; its rigidity doesn't suit the Lindy's relaxed design.

Is the Lindy a quota bag?

No. The Lindy is not part of the BKC (Birkin, Kelly, Constance) quota allocation system. However, it has become so difficult to find at boutiques that it effectively behaves like a quota bag in practice. Boutique availability is limited and often requires an established purchase history. The authenticated secondary market offers immediate access.

How does the Lindy compare to the Birkin?

The Birkin is a structured two handle tote with no shoulder or crossbody option. The Lindy is a slouchy three way carry bag. The Birkin makes a statement. The Lindy makes your day easier. Different purposes. Most collectors eventually own both.

Does the Lindy hold its value?

Yes, and increasingly so. Since 2023, secondary market prices for the Lindy have climbed as demand outpaced supply. Popular configurations (Clemence or Evercolor in neutral colours, sizes 26 and 30) now trade at or above retail. The Lindy's trajectory resembles the early price appreciation of the Kelly before it reached its current market position.
