Hermès belt

The Hermès belt is the piece that gets people into the house. Before the bags, before the sandals, before the scarves, there's usually a belt. And the reason is simple: a Hermès H buckle belt is one of the most recognisable accessories in the world, it's built from the same calfskin that goes int...

How the Hermès Belt System Works

This is what most people don't realise until they buy their first Hermès belt: the buckle and the strap are sold separately, and the straps are reversible. One strap gives you two colours. One buckle works across any strap of the same width. So your first purchase is a "belt kit" (buckle plus strap), and every strap you buy after that doubles your combinations. Two straps and two buckles give you eight different belt looks. Three of each give you eighteen. The system is designed to grow with you, which is why people who own one Hermès belt almost always own three.

The Buckles

Constance H Buckle

The one everyone means when they say "Hermès belt." A large H shaped buckle that takes its name from the Constance bag. Available in polished palladium, brushed palladium, polished gold, brushed gold, rose gold, and matte black (PVD). The 32mm width is the most popular for both men and women. The 42mm is bolder and leans more masculine. If you're buying your first Hermès belt, the Constance H buckle in brushed palladium or brushed gold at 32mm is the most versatile starting point.

Mini Constance

The same H design scaled down to 24mm width. Slimmer, more delicate, designed for women who want the H without the visual weight of the standard 32mm. Works beautifully threaded through the loops of high waisted trousers or worn over a dress at the natural waist.

Kelly Buckle

A turnlock closure inspired by the Kelly bag. The Kelly belt is not interchangeable in the same way as the Constance: it's a fixed assembly where the buckle is integrated into the strap. The Kelly Pocket belt adds a small removable pouch, which is one of the more interesting accessories Hermès makes: a belt that carries your cards and keys so you don't need a bag.

Other Buckles

Hermès also produces the Calandre (an anchor chain link design), the Gamma (a minimalist rounded rectangle), the Tonight (a slim art deco buckle), and seasonal limited editions that rotate in and out of production. The Constance H remains the most popular by a wide margin, but collectors building a belt rotation often add a Gamma or Tonight for variety.

The Straps

Every Hermès belt strap is reversible: finished on both sides in different colours, often in different leathers. A black Togo on one side and gold Epsom on the other is the classic combination. The leathers you'll see most often: Togo (soft, textured, casual), Epsom (structured, scratch resistant, the workhorse), Swift (smooth, luxurious, formal), and Box (high gloss, the dressiest option). Exotic straps in crocodile, alligator, and ostrich exist at several multiples of the standard leather price.

Widths: 13mm (women's, very thin, decorative), 24mm (women's standard), 32mm (unisex, the most popular), 38mm (men's wider option), and 42mm (men's, bold). The 32mm works for virtually everyone regardless of gender, which is why it outsells every other width combined.

Sizing

Hermès belt sizes are measured in centimetres and correspond to the distance from the buckle to the centre hole. Most straps have five holes. The most common sizes: 70cm and 75cm for women, 85cm, 90cm, and 95cm for men, though this varies by build and where you wear the belt (at the waist versus on the hips). The safest approach: measure a belt you already own from the buckle prong to the hole you use, and match that measurement to the Hermès size chart. If between sizes, go up. Additional holes can always be punched.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an Hermès belt cost?

A standard belt kit (Constance H buckle plus reversible leather strap) retails from approximately AED 3,500 to AED 4,500 depending on buckle finish and strap leather. Additional straps retail from approximately AED 1,500 to AED 2,500. Exotic leather straps and limited edition buckles cost significantly more. Secondary market pricing depends on configuration, condition, and availability.

Are Hermès belt buckles and straps interchangeable?

Yes, within the same width. A 32mm buckle fits any 32mm strap. A 42mm buckle fits any 42mm strap. The Kelly belt is the exception: it's a fixed assembly. The Constance H, Mini Constance, Gamma, Tonight, and most other buckles are all interchangeable with straps of matching width. This is the system's best feature: buy one buckle, add straps, and your combinations multiply.

Are Hermès belt straps reversible?

Yes. Every standard Hermès strap is fully finished on both sides in different colours, often in different leathers. Flip the strap and you have a different belt. This means one strap gives you two looks. Two straps and two buckles give you eight combinations.

What is the most popular Hermès belt?

The Constance H buckle in 32mm with a reversible black and gold strap. This is the combination most people buy first and the one you see most often. Brushed palladium and brushed gold finishes are the most versatile buckle options because they work with both warm and cool colour palettes.

What size Hermès belt should I buy?

Measure a belt you already own from the buckle prong to the hole you use. Match that measurement to the Hermès size chart (sizes are in centimetres). Common sizes: 70cm to 75cm for women, 85cm to 95cm for men. If between sizes, go up. Additional holes can be punched by any Hermès boutique or quality cobbler.

Can men and women wear the same Hermès belt?

The 32mm Constance H belt is genuinely unisex and outsells every other width combined. Most colour and leather combinations work for both. The 13mm and 24mm widths lean feminine. The 38mm and 42mm lean masculine. But the 32mm is the one that works for everyone, which is why it's the first belt most people buy.

Do Hermès belts hold their value?

Standard Constance H belt kits hold approximately 65% to 80% of retail in excellent condition. Limited edition buckles and exotic straps can hold at or above retail. Hermès raises belt prices annually, which supports resale values over time. The interchangeable system also means you can sell individual buckles or straps separately if you're rotating your collection.

How do I spot a fake Hermès belt?

Hermès belts are among the most counterfeited luxury accessories in the world. Professional authentication examines: the engraving on the buckle (depth, font, spacing), the leather quality and grain pattern on both sides of the strap, the stitching count and thread colour, the Hermès stamp on the strap interior, and the overall weight and finish of the hardware. At Konesseur, every belt is verified in house before listing. Do not buy an unverified Hermès belt from any source.
